Master’s Degree In Cybersecurity Overview
Master’s degree in cybersecurity is there to help you learn more about advanced skills associated with IT security in order to protect a company’s assets. Depending on your interests, you may wish to take specific subjects and majors that have their own set of challenges and knowledge to learn. The degree can ultimately take up to 2-3 years to finish.
Do you really need a Master’s degree though? It completely depends on your choice. Most jobs will require at most a technical bachelor’s degree unless you opt for a very high level position in an organization.
A Master’s is perfect if you:
- Want to jump to the next level of your career within an organization
- Want to get into a managerial position
- Want to enter cybersecurity field without a BS in Cybersecurity, Computer Science or any other related technical degree
- Want to do extensive research on cyber security topics
What are the different kinds of Master’s Degrees in cybersecurity
MS in Computer Science
A lot of universities offer the computer science option instead of cybersecurity degree. You can opt for a specialization within this degree that tackles issues with cybersecurity. But you will still have to have knowledge in technical skills like programming, operating systems, software engineering etc to get into a Master’s.
MS in Cybersecurity
Relatively new field in the industry means that cybersecurity specialized degrees are still very few in number. But it is a degree that ultimately expands on the Bachelor’s version. You may have to deal with data integrity, businesses continuity and risk management. Courses can easily deal with new technologies or tools that are commonly used in organizations.
MS in Information Assurance
Information Assurance deals with both managerial and technical aspects of cybersecurity like protecting and controlling the information on information systems. Courses like auditing, forensics, intrusion detection are commonly seen in this degree.
MS in Computer Engineering
Computer engineering is very similar in nature to computer science. You can choose to specialize in cyber security. The degree is concerned mostly with both hardware and software development. If you choose to take security as your major, you will be covering topics like embedded systems, microprocessors, security software development and advanced data structures.
MS In Information Technology
Information technology degree is less technical and a little more theoretical. It is best used as a qualification for managerial posts where you have to lead a team instead of developing or doing the hands on job. You will deal with courses like security risks, IT best practices, regulatory issues and organizational objectives.
Curriculum Overview
Schools tend to keep their courses different from other schools in the industry. But most of the course work still revolves around computer security when it comes to a cybersecurity degree. We have compiled a list of common courses that are usually present in all degrees.

Master’s Degree Admission Requirements
Following are the common standards set by universities when making decision over admission:
- Student should have a bachelor’s degree in a technical subject from an accredited university
- The GPA should be good. A lot of universities accept students with GPA 3.o or more
- At least 1-2 years of experience in calculus
